Help "Retired" Lab Animals Find Their Forever Homes

Help "Retired" Lab Animals Find Their Forever Homes

Name of Bill: Animal Freedom from Testing, Experimentation, and Research (AFTER) Act

Bill Number: S. 1378/ H.R. 5244

Healthy animals who were once used in research deserve the opportunity to be placed into loving homes or sanctuaries, and new bipartisan Federal legislation would give them that chance.

The Animal Freedom from Testing, Experimentation, and Research (AFTER) Act would amend the Animal Welfare Act to ensure that all federal agencies using lab animals for research have policies in place to facilitate the relocation of retired, healthy lab animals to private homes, animal rescues or reputable sanctuaries.

Please support S. 1378/H.R. 5244 to connect retired lab animals with loving homes

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask you to support the bipartisan Animal Freedom from Testing, Experimentation, and Research (AFTER) Act, S. 1378 and H.R. 5244, to allow for the retirement of certain animals once they are done being used in federal research.

Currently, the majority of animals that are used in federal research are killed when their research purpose comes to an end, even if the animal is a healthy dog, cat, bird, horse etc. S. 1378/H.R. 5244 would amend the Animal Welfare Act to ensure that all federal agencies using lab animals for research have policies in place to facilitate the relocation of retired, healthy lab animals to private homes, animal rescues or reputable sanctuaries.

This bill also requires that animals be evaluated by a licensed veterinarian and pronounced both mentally and physically healthy before leaving an agency, helping to ensure a smooth transition to their new home.

There is no reason that healthy animals who are suitable for adoption or retirement should be killed by federal agencies. By supporting the Animal Freedom from Testing, Experimentation, and Research (AFTER) Act, you could give these retired, healthy animals a second chance at a loving home.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
