Ensure protection for animals during disasters

Ensure protection for animals during disasters

Name of Bill: Providing Responsible Emergency Plans for Animals at Risk of Emerging Disasters (PREPARED) Act

Bill Number: HR 1442

Without a federal requirement for disaster planning, animals in institutional settings around the country remain at risk. One way to ensure that these animals are protected when disaster strikes is through proper planning. Lack of preparedness during disasters, both natural and man-made, can have especially devastating effects on animals and the people who risk their own safety to protect them.

The PREPARED Act would mandate that entities regulated under the Animal Welfare Act–such as commercial animal dealers, exhibitors, and research facilities–have contingency plans in place to safely evacuate and care for animals in a disaster or other emergency situation.

Please co-sponsor the PREPARED Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor the Providing Responsible Emergency Plans for Animals at Risk of Emerging Disasters (PREPARED) Act, H.R. 1442, which would protect animals in times of disaster.

Without a federal requirement for disaster planning, animals in institutional settings around the country remain at risk in the face of emergencies. One way to ensure that animals are protected when disaster strikes is through proper planning.

The PREPARED Act would mandate that entities regulated under the Animal Welfare Actsuch as commercial animal dealers, exhibitors, and research facilitieshave contingency plans in place to safely evacuate and care for animals in an emergency or disaster situation.

Natural disasters are on the rise and this legislation is needed now more than ever. Please support this legislation so that institutions will have well-formed plans to ensure that no USDA-regulated facility is ever caught unprepared in a crisisand that no animal is abandoned by the very institutions charged with caring for them.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
