Allow pharmaceutical companies to pursue non-animal testing methods

Allow pharmaceutical companies to pursue non-animal testing methods

Name of Bill: Alternatives to Animals for Regulatory Fairness (AARF) Act

Bill Number: HR 1905

BeagleWe know that animal test methods are inhumane, inefficient, and inaccurate. Despite this, in certain cases, the Federal and Drug Administration (FDA) won’t allow companies to pursue alternatives that do not require animal testing.

The Alternatives to Animals for Regulatory Fairness (AARF) Act would require the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to permit pharmaceutical companies to use a non-animal test method as an equally acceptable alternative to an animal test method for the purposes of demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of a drug.

Please support H.R. 1905 to permit pharmaceutical companies to avoid running tests on animals

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask your support for the Alternatives to Animals for Regulatory Fairness (AARF) Act, H.R. 1905. This is an important piece of legislation that would require the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to permit pharmaceutical companies to avoid running test on dogs and other animals. Specifically, this bill would allow the sponsor of a drug to use a non-animal test as an equally acceptable alternative to an animal test for the purposes of demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of a drug. Currently, the FDA can prohibit companies from using non-animal testing methods.

Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that approximately 90 percent of medications fail in human clinical trials, despite promising preclinical trials in animals--30 percent because they are found to be toxic, and an additional 60 percent due to lack of efficacy. Studies such as this indicate that non-animal testing methods are often more effective and efficient than traditional animal use.

Testing human drugs on dogs and other animals is inhumane, inefficient and inaccurate. The enactment of this bill is crucial to further the goal of replacing, reducing and/or refining animal testingmaking this a safer country for both animals and humans alike.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
