New York: New legislation strengthens existing law that helps research dog and cats find loving homes

New York: New legislation strengthens existing law that helps research dog and cats find loving homes

Name of Bill: Relating to the adoption of cats and dogs previously used for research

Bill Number: A.636

Healthy animals who were once used in research deserve the opportunity to be adopted into loving homes. New legislation introduced in New York strengthens an existing law that gives dogs and cats this chance.

A.636 would require research facilities to share with the Department of Education information on dogs and cats no longer needed for research so the department can help those animals find loving homes. The bill also requires that research facilities hold available dogs and cats for at least 14 days while looking for suitable placement outside the lab.

Please support A636 to give research animals a chance at adoption!

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask you to vote in support of A.636, which strengthens an existing law requiring research facilities to offer up healthy dogs and cats for adoption once they are no longer needed in the lab.

New York is already on the front lines of this work since passing its initial post-research adoption legislation in 2016. A.636 will strengthen the existing law by requiring that research facilities share with the Department of Education information on all dogs and cats that are suitable for adoption so that the department can help those animals find suitable placement. The bill also mandates a 14-day holding period between posting of the information and euthanasia if no suitable placement is found.

Please support passage of A.636 and give dogs and cats that have spent their lives as test subjects a better chance at a loving home.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
