Massachusetts: Ban on Cruel Animal Tests for Cosmetics Safety Needs Action

Massachusetts: Ban on Cruel Animal Tests for Cosmetics Safety Needs Action

Name: Ban on Use of Animals for Product Testing

Bill Number: S 2504

Bunny RabbitThis bill would prohibit the use of traditional animal test methods when testing any ingredient or product in the state, provided an alternative test method exists. While the bill excludes medical research from the scope of its coverage, it does clarify that any entity not covered by this legislation could still rely on alternative test methods if they choose.

The use of animals for safety testing has already been banned in six states because there are far more reliable and humane means of ensuring the safety of products and chemicals. Until the federal government moves forward on the Humane Cosmetics Act, state legislatures must take action to end the use of animals when there are humane alternatives already in place.

In a time when legislation can be lengthy and complicated, this bill is simple: stop the suffering of animals used for product safety testing when non-animal test methods are effective and humane. Ask your legislator to support legislation to make Massachusetts the next state to adopt a humane cosmetics law.

Put an End to Inhumane Animal Safety Testing this Year

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask you to move forward with passage of S 2504, which would prohibit the use of animal testing when alternative, non-animal methods are available. There are numerous alternative toxicity testing methods--including cell cultures, isolated animal tissues and computer simulations--that have proven to be as effective as testing on live animals.

With current scientific advancements, non-animal tests are more reliable, effective and humane than animal tests that were developed in the last century. Many manufacturers already use non-animal test methods; however, this legislation will give other companies a push to not only stop relying on animal testing, but also to work toward the development of new tests where none currently exist.

In a time when legislation can be lengthy and complicated, this bill is simple: stop the suffering of animals used for product safety testing when non-animal test methods are effective and humane. There is no justification for the continued reliance on cruel animal tests to ensure the safety of cosmetics.

Please give your full support to the passage of this measure and let our state lead the way in the global movement toward cruelty-free cosmetics. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
